When it’s hot, fiery, or torrid outside, you want something cold. Kansas City may not be somewhere you associate with hot weather, but it is where Diana Condori created the Heatwave Cooler. I learned about this deliciously chilled cocktail in Chilled (seriously) magazine.

The Heatwave Cooler

2 ounces clear rum
1.5 ounces cream of coconut
.5 ounces lime juice
.5 ounces apricot liqueur
.25 ounces allspice dram

Combine in a shaker with ice (preferably crushed), shake with the intensity of the sun’s rays in a cloudless sky, and put everything (including the ice) into a rocks glass. Lime slice and/or mint garnish optional.

Integral parts of the classic and simple Pina Colada, rum and cream of coconut give the Heatwave Cooler a refreshing base. The lime juice and allspice dram (both in the Lion’s Tail) inject some zesty flavor into the cocktail. And what about the apricot liqueur (which makes the Angelic Martini heavenly)? It adds a little subtle power. Keeping the shaken ice in the drink instead of straining it seems odd (at least to me), but it definitely gives the Heatwave Cooler liquid endurance. Put it all together and the Heatwave Cooler becomes a refreshing antidote to heat (weather or otherwise) surrounding you.

Can’t take the heat? Have a Heatwave Cooler.
