Carbelicious Cocktail — The Day Old Bread

Carbe what? I made up the word carbelicious to refer to tasty carbohydrates such as bread. The Day Old Bread is a creation from Frederic Yarm, who in 2023 came up with this variation on the 100 Year Old Cigar. I learned about the Day Old Bread from Artist With A Cocktail on Instagram.

The Day Old Bread

1.5 ounces rye
.5 ounces aquavit
.5 ounces Benedictine DOM
.5 ounces Cynar
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Absinthe

Rinse the inside of a chilled glass (preferably a coupe) with absinthe (like a Sazerac), discard the remaining absinthe, combine everything else in a mixing glass with ice, stir with crusty zeal, and strain into the glass.

The Day Old Bread is the complex sum of its many ingredients. Rye and the caraway flavor of the aquavit, the backbone of drinks such as my Scandinavian Suntan and Danish Road Rage, give the Day Old Bread some power. You can use either clear or aged aquavit (I suggest aged). So what balances these vibrant spirits? That would be the Benedictine DOM, an herbal liqueur used in the Brainstorm, and Cynar, an amaro used in the Larceny and Old Lace. Bottom line is there’s a lot going on in the Day Old Bread. If you like the bread theme, try my 24601, which is sweeter without sacrificing strength.

Have a Day Old Bread and experience carbeliciousness!
